I’m not sure how I even picked it up, but I ended up listening to Running Hot by Jayne Ann Krentz. I’ve since learned that this is book 5 in her Arcane Society series.

Okay, first, I would never knowingly pick up book 5 in a series. Well, if you’ve seen my post on Jonathan Kellerman I’ll have to amend that to rarely. But seriously rarely. And not in this case. I had no idea it was part of a series. Second, I didn’t love the paranormal aspects of this, though that very well might be due to coming in mid-series, since I have no trouble with paranormal generally.

This book had a lot going for it. It was certainly hot (always a plus), and I loved the secondary characters in the dive bar and the hole-in-the-wall Chinese restaurant. There was also a lot to like about the main characters. There was just something about the overall book that made me give it 3 of 5 stars when I rated it. I just didn’t love it.

There was also very much something about the book that made me want to read something else Jayne Ann Krentz that was not Arcane Society, so I consider that a win. I’ve got several of her books in my to-be-read pile, and I’ll be bumping them up just a bit closer to the top based on this book.
