It’s really spring Garden Roll-Call
Apr 30

It’s 35°F (2°C for those who think that way) here right now. Which wouldn’t be so bad, except that there was a propane leak in my office overnight, so we currently have the doors open to air the place out. So I’m going to head to Florida now mentally. We’re supposed to have 85°F temps while we’re there. Hope my bosses won’t mind if I’m not quite all here for the next couple days.

Physically, my Mom and I are headed to Tallahassee Friday morning, and I’m super excited. I’ve got the link to my brothers’ restaurant over yonder in the side bar, but since we’re headed there, let me expand on that.

I won’t go into the details, but opportunity knocked, and my two younger brothers answered and decided to go with their dream to open a restaurant. The reality of Monk’s Bar & Grill began in maybe February of this year, and they opened their doors for business on April 10. They’ve kept very busy, and people are giving consistently positive feedback about the food, the atmosphere, and the people.

My mom and I are both very excited - neither of us has seen either of my brothers since March of last year, we can’t wait to check out the restaurant (we’ve counted that we have eight meals to try different things from the menu), and we always have a blast traveling together.

If I get any good ones, I’ll post some photos when I get home.

Have a great trip, congrats and many years of good luck to your brothers, and if you want sunshine, c’mon down to Phoenix. We’re happy because it’s supposed to drop to the low 90s by the weekend.

Is Monk’s website finished now or are you going to work on it more when you’re down there with them? (And then you can tax-deduct your trip! :) )

I’m going to pass on temps that high, thanks! I actually didn’t mind that we had frost last night. It’s par for the course this time of year around here. I minded that it had to be that cold inside my office as well. But doors are closed, so it’s all warm now.

The website is mostly finished. I’ve still got to take pictures, since they’ve never bothered to send me the pictures of their restaurant that they’ve taken. All the pictures on the site are stock photos right now, but that will change next week. Not so sure about the deducting part. I suppose first they’d have to pay me (they’re not), then I’d have to pay taxes on that income before I could deduct the expenses of the trip. No thanks!

I can remember when my apartment complex lost all heat. I was studying for a big exam and remember huddling around an electric heater with my two cats (no family back then). It was so awful…

That must have been horrible! We did have heat at least. Of course, a heating unit does have trouble keeping with a constant influx of roughly 35 degree temperatures. I was glad to have a suede coat, a fleece shirt, and a fleece blanket for my legs!

And wouldn’t you know, I just found out that Delta’s switch from a 2-bag allowance to a 1-bag allowance per passenger (that’s checked bags, not carry-on) happens on Monday. The day before we fly home. So not only do I have to pack everything in one bag, I can’t even pack an extra duffel to carry home any purchases made while we’re gone. Sigh.

Can you pay a small fee to check an extra bag?
If you find something great, there’s always those ‘Mailboxes’ stores.

The heating thing was pretty awful. The old furnace went down and they had to ‘order parts’. You know how well that usually goes. We ended up going for 2 months with no heat (all of us got rent breaks, but still). We were lucky it was a relatively warm spring.

The writer in me is thinking that this just might be a good way to torture a character…

I think it’s $25 per extra bag, which is a lot. But shipping items home is always an option. Or, you know, wearing three layers of clothes to free up space in the suitcase. :)
